Stop Treating AI Like a Chatbot, Creating Images/Videos, Writing, and Search Engine: The Era of the Autonomous Colleague is Already Here

Over the last three months, sitting across from founders, executives, and operators all over Southeast Asia, the same pattern keeps showing up. Everyone knows what AI is from the headlines, and almost everyone has an app open on their phone or laptop. Yet when you look at what they are actually doing with it, 95% of people are still stuck in 2023—using the most transformative technology of our lifetime as a glorified chatbot to polish emails, summarize a PDF, or answer trivia.

While much of the region is still treating AI like a slightly smarter search bar, the ground shifted beneath our feet in mid-August.

We quietly crossed the threshold from conversational AI to agentic AI. Look at what has rolled out and matured over the last few months: xAI’s Grok Bot operating with its own persistent computer, Meta’s Muse navigating the open web in its own virtual machine, Dots, Duet, and self-hosted persistent runtimes like Hermes-Bot equipped with long-term memory and sub-agents.

These are no longer chatbots waiting for you to type a clever prompt so they can spit out a paragraph of text. They are autonomous digital colleagues. They have their own browser environments, persistent memory across sessions, and the ability to plan, execute, observe, and course-correct in the background while you sleep.

In my own operations, the shift from "chatting" to "delegating" has completely changed how work gets done. Today, you can hand off real, multi-step operational workflows to these bots just like you would to a sharp junior analyst or a dedicated personal assistant:

  • Competitor & Market Intelligence: Instead of manually checking what your rivals are doing, your bot scrapes competitor websites daily, monitors their promotional campaigns, tracks regional industry events, and drops a clean briefing into your message feed every morning. -

Live Commodities & Pricing Trackers: Whether you are watching raw material costs, currency fluctuations, or retail SKU pricing across suppliers, autonomous agents can monitor live feeds, log the data, and alert you only when a threshold is breached. -

Personal Logistics & Procurement: From comparing flight routes and holding bookings to navigating e-commerce checkouts and sourcing niche equipment, agents like Muse and Grok Bot actually click the buttons, fill out the forms, and come back to you solely for final payment approval.

Yet, when I share this with business leaders around the region, the first question is almost always: "Where can I send my team for a workshop? Which course should I sign up for?"

Here is my honest advice: Forget the workshops.

By the time a training provider packages a syllabus and prints the slides, the tools have already evolved twice. You cannot learn how to manage an autonomous colleague by sitting in a hotel ballroom watching someone else's PowerPoint. And you certainly don't need a coding degree or a "Prompt Engineering" certificate anymore.

The only way to cross this gap is to get your hands dirty tonight:

  1. Put skin in the game. Stop relying on crippled free tiers. Pick one or two agentic platforms, put down a small $20 to $50 monthly investment, and treat it as the cheapest R&D budget you will ever spend. 2.

Give it a real job, not a test question. Don't ask it to write a poem. Tell it to track five competitors' pricing pages every Tuesday, or ask it to find and compare three flight options for your next regional trip based on your calendar. 3.

Let the bot teach you. This is the ultimate secret that stops most people from starting: if you don't know how to set up a workflow, a web scraper, or an integration, just ask the bot to do it for you. Modern agents can write their own scripts, configure their own skills, and walk you through the exact permissions they need step-by-step.

Southeast Asia’s digital economy is moving fast, and the gap between businesses that merely talk to AI and those that delegate to autonomous agents is widening by the week. Stop waiting for a manual. Open an account, spend a little money, hand over a real task, and get your hands dirty.
